                                March Reminder

3/12   As in the past we are represented at the Special Olympics Swim Meet at Windham High  - Bev Gotch has tirelessly sponsored a table for the club for many years.  We will meet at 9am & march in with our club banner  -  if you have time, volunteers to give Bev a hand are always welcome.

3/13   Our annual Mass for club members (past & present) at St Joseph’s Church will be at 9:30am  -  we’ll meet out front & go in together as a group.

3/13   After Mass we have an Irish flag raising ceremony at the Fire-Safety Complex at 11:00am, following coffee & doughnuts.

3/13   This year we are pleased to have found a new location for our Irish Brunch following our other festivities.  We will be at the Paper Birch on the N. Windham/Chaplin border.  For those of us who have been attending this brunch for several years, this restaurant  was once known as Edelweiss & then Portobellos.  It is under new management & we look forward to again having a regular place we can celebrate our annual get-together.  Your reservation for the brunch will be $20pp – please make your check out to Irish Club, PO 12, Willimantic Ct 06226.   Full Gael will again be providing our Irish entertainment.

3/17   The Chef’s Hat at Windham Tech has again offered us a special Irish lunch for just our club & our friends.  It will be $12pp & there will be a choice of corned beef, lamb shanks or fish  -  if you have signed up but cannot attend, please call John Feeney so he can include someone from the waiting list.  We meet at the door at 11:00am.

3/19   Our 2ND annual Blarney Stone 5K Dash sponsored by Blarney’s Cafe will be held at Windham Middle School.  The actual race doesn’t start until 10:00,  but we will need plenty of volunteers to man the various stations & they should  be here at 8:30am.  This could be a very important method for us as a club to continue to raise money & provide scholarship grants in the future.  Thanks to the Windham Rec Dept & the McCarthys, we have an event we can build on each year.

We are trying to decide where we will have our Brunch this year after our flag-raising ceremony on the 13th of March.  We are considering Fennigans in Hebron, so we will have lunch there on Feb 8th to talk to owners and check it out.

We have our Second Annual Road Race scheduled for March 19th.  Please call Mary McCarthy to offer whatever time you can offer to help.  We had approx 70 runners entered last year & all went wonderfully well, so we hope to be even bigger this year.  We’d like to go out together for lunch to celebrate our hard work after the race, so we’re working on a place for that aw well.

Just a friendly reminder to members  -  our annual dues are due on March 17th  -  see Bob McCarthy.

A special wish for our members, Grace Roy and Charlotte Phillips: “A sunbeam to warm you, a  moon-beam to charm you. A sheltering angel so nothing can harm you.”  We all send our love & best wishes for your speedy recovery  -  God Bless.

Why Saint Patrick's Day?
Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.
